Claude Code Mods: Deep AI Customization and Internal Control Enhancement

Summary

Anthropic has recently introduced “Mods” to Claude Code, a significant enhancement that opens up unprecedented levels of customization for the AI development environment. Unlike previous features such as skills, hooks, and MCP servers, which operate externally to provide additional capabilities, Mods are integrated directly into Claude Code’s core. This fundamental difference grants Mods deeper control over the agent’s behavior and even its user interface, allowing for a truly personalized experience akin to an “everything is a plugin” architecture.

Technically, a Mod is packaged as a plugin, typically implemented as a JavaScript or TypeScript file, that runs internally without requiring a separate build step and supports hot reloading for rapid development. When Claude Code is about to perform an action, such as executing a tool call, an active Mod can intercept this event. It has three primary choices: observe (let the action proceed, possibly logging it), rewrite (modify the action before it’s executed, like changing a command), or answer (stop the action and provide its own response). This deep integration allows Mods to directly control the agent’s internal processes and can even alter what the user sees on the screen, for instance, redacting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from responses before it’s displayed, while the model itself still processes the original data.

The true power of Mods lies in their persistence and deep access, setting them apart from simpler “hooks” which are one-shot scripts that run once and then exit. A Mod loads once and remains active throughout the entire session, enabling it to remember state, display live updating panels in the UI, pause actions to prompt the user for input, or execute instant slash commands without requiring additional model interaction. Significantly, Anthropic itself is embracing this architecture, building core Claude Code features like the diff viewer and agents.md instruction support as built-in Mods. This strategic shift empowers users to fundamentally tailor their Claude Code experience, making it unique to their individual workflows.

Practical applications of Mods range from simple tools like a persistent tool call counter and custom dashboard bars to more sophisticated features such as safety guards that can prevent destructive commands (e.g., rm -rf) by prompting user confirmation or suggesting safer alternatives. The video also highlights the innovative ability to automatically create personalized Mods by analyzing a user’s past Claude Code sessions, identifying recurring tasks or commands that cause hesitation. However, a crucial takeaway is the significant security implication: Mods run with the same permissions as the user on their local machine. Therefore, users are strongly cautioned to meticulously validate any third-party Mod before installation, scrutinizing its declared events and calls to ensure it doesn’t pose a risk by accessing sensitive files, running unauthorized programs, or making unwarranted network requests. This emphasizes a “don’t blindly trust” approach, similar to how one would vet external skills or servers.

Description

Claude Code mods let you run your own JavaScript or TypeScript functions inside Claude Code. A mod can watch, change or stop a tool call before it runs, and it can draw its own panels in the terminal and the desktop app. In this video I explain what a Claude Code mod is and how it differs from hooks, skills and MCP servers. Then I show how to install mods from a marketplace and how I had Claude write a set of mods for my own workflow.

Mods run on your machine with your permissions. Read a mod, or run claude plugin validate on it, before you install it.
