ArtCraft’s Vibe-Coded AI-Native Rust Microsoft Office Re-implementations: Early Review

Summary

The video discusses “vibe-coded app clones” developed by the ArtCraft team, focusing on their new clean-room re-implementations of Microsoft Office applications: WordCraft (Microsoft Word), GridCraft (Excel), and DeckCraft (PowerPoint). Building on their previous success with Adobe software clones, these new applications are entirely written in 100% pure Rust, a high-performance programming language, making them efficient and cross-platform (compatible with macOS, Windows, Linux, and even web browsers via WebAssembly). A unique and significant feature highlighted is their “AI-native” or “agent-native” design, incorporating built-in MCP (Micro-Control Protocol) servers that allow AI models to interact with and control the software in novel ways.

The presenter demonstrates each application, noting that they are all in very early stages of development. WordCraft successfully mimics the Microsoft Word user interface but exhibits several bugs, such as inconsistent italic formatting, peculiar icon rendering, and cumbersome image placement. While basic functions like adding tables and equations are present, they are often rudimentary or not fully editable. GridCraft, the Excel alternative, fares better, displaying functional bar and pie charts that dynamically update with data changes. It supports basic spreadsheet operations, including autosum and duplicate removal, and its AI integration effectively generates data and charts. DeckCraft, the PowerPoint clone, also closely replicates its counterpart’s interface, allowing for slide creation, text editing, and the addition of animations and transitions, though these features are notably laggy and buggy.

A core takeaway is the impressive, albeit nascent, AI integration. The presenter uses an AI assistant (Claude Code) to interact with GridCraft and DeckCraft, showcasing its ability to generate data, create charts, and even produce entire presentation slides filled with “corporate buzzwords” and “heinous corporate transgressions,” often with humorous results. Despite the excitement for the innovative Rust development and AI capabilities, the presenter concludes by questioning the practical necessity of these Microsoft Office clones. He points out that robust, mature, free, and open-source alternatives like LibreOffice already exist, offering superior stability and functionality compared to these very early-stage projects. However, he remains optimistic about the long-term potential of ArtCraft’s unique approach, particularly their AI-native design.

The ArtCraft team seems to have vibe coded every major Adobe app. In my last two videos I took a look at PhotoCraft (Photoshop alternative), LightCraft (Lightroom alternative), and FilmCraft (Premiere Pro alternative), VectorCraft (Adobe Illustrator alternative), and EffectCraft (After Effects alternative). But today we are trying Artcraft’s microsoft office alternatives WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft. I also test their MCP functionality with claude code. These have only been public on GitHub for a few days and are early Alpha, but are already much more capable than I expected and might be very capable alternatives to the adobe creative cloud very soon.
