Self-Administered Oncolytic Virotherapy in Recurrent Breast Cancer: Dr. Halassy’s Case
Clip title: This Woman Cured Her Cancer with an Insane Method Author / channel: Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NY2gAftzJE
Summary
Dr. Beata Halassy, a Croatian virologist, faced a dire prognosis after her aggressive breast cancer recurred multiple times despite surgery and four harsh rounds of chemotherapy. By 2018, her Stage 3B cancer was invading her muscles and skin, leaving her with very slim chances of survival. In a daring move, Dr. Halassy decided to take matters into her own hands, supported by her colleagues, to develop and administer an experimental virotherapy on herself, bypassing the stringent safety protocols typically required for human trials.
The video explains that viruses inherently “love” cancer cells due to fundamental biological differences. Unlike healthy cells, which can slow down, call for immune system help, or trigger self-destruction when infected, cancer cells are hyperactive and lack these vital defense mechanisms. This makes them ideal targets for oncolytic viruses, which can multiply unchecked within cancer cells, causing them to explode. This destructive process releases cancer debris and new virus particles, alerting and activating the body’s immune system to join the fight, leading to a more comprehensive attack against the tumor without the widespread toxicity of conventional chemotherapy.
Dr. Halassy and her team engineered a clinical-grade measles virus vaccine strain, which she then injected directly into her tumor over several weeks. Initially, the tumor dramatically swelled due to a massive influx of immune cells. Subsequently, it began to shrink, soften, and ceased its aggressive invasion of surrounding tissues. She later introduced a second virus, VSV (Vesicular Stomatitis Indiana Virus), to further amplify her immune response. After two months of these targeted injections, the significantly weakened tumor was surgically removed. Laboratory analysis revealed that half of the tumor’s mass was composed of her own immune cells, actively destroying the remaining cancer cells. Six years after her unique treatment, Dr. Halassy’s cancer has not returned, indicating a successful personal cure.
Dr. Halassy’s self-experimentation sparked both admiration for her bravery and significant criticism from medical ethicists due to her decision to bypass established regulatory processes. The video highlights a critical “trade-off slider” in medical innovation: accelerating progress by making trials easier, faster, and cheaper often comes at the cost of immediate patient safety, while prioritizing safety can significantly slow down or even prevent the development of potentially life-saving therapies. Currently, regulatory systems lean heavily towards safety, often reserving novel treatments like virotherapy for late-stage cancer patients whose bodies and immune systems are already severely compromised by previous aggressive treatments. Dr. Halassy hopes her case will encourage further research and earlier integration of virotherapy into cancer treatment, offering a less toxic and potentially more effective option to patients earlier in their battle against the disease. While virotherapy is not a universal cure for all cancers, it represents a promising new and targeted weapon in combination with other treatments.

In a battle against cancer, could viruses be our allies? When Croatian virologist Dr. Beata Halassy’s breast cancer returned for the third time, she made a bold decision: to experiment on herself using millions of viruses grown in her own lab. Viruses love cancer cells, which helped her turn them into a weapon against her own tumor.
What happens when you infect cancer with a virus, and could virotherapy become a powerful new tool against cancer?
