Summary
LG Energy Solution, a major battery supplier for companies like Tesla and General Motors, has announced a significant breakthrough in Lithium Manganese Rich (LMR) battery technology, in collaboration with Seoul National University. This development addresses a long-standing challenge for LMR batteries, paving the way for significantly cheaper and more efficient electric vehicle (EV) batteries that could soon be available to consumers. The core promise of this new technology is to deliver substantial cost savings without compromising the long-range capabilities currently associated with more expensive battery chemistries.
The video highlights that current long-range EV batteries rely heavily on costly materials like nickel and, particularly, cobalt, which is the most expensive ingredient and often associated with ethical sourcing concerns. LMR technology fundamentally alters this composition, utilizing approximately 65% manganese and 35% nickel, with almost no cobalt. Manganese is desirable for its abundance, lower cost, and ease of sourcing. Crucially, LMR batteries boast about a third more energy density than Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells, another cost-effective alternative, while still being potentially cheaper to manufacture due to the reduced reliance on expensive materials.
The primary hurdle for LMR batteries has always been their lifespan. Historically, oxygen within the material would not fully return to its original state during each discharge cycle, gradually degrading the internal structure and generating gas, which caused swelling in large battery cells – a critical safety and durability issue for automotive applications. The breakthrough was not in inventing new materials, but in optimizing operational processes. Researchers found that simply lowering the charging cutoff voltage from 4.6V to 4.3V and conducting the initial conditioning charge at a lower temperature dramatically improved oxygen recovery (from 86% to 97%) and significantly reduced gas generation, effectively solving the lifespan problem.
The practical implications of this research are substantial. Testing showed that a 40 amp-hour car-sized LMR cell retained 92.2% of its original energy capacity after 883 full charge and discharge cycles. For an EV with a 400-mile (640 km) range, this translates to over 350,000 miles (565,000 km) of driving before losing just 8% of battery capacity, far exceeding typical vehicle lifespans. This innovation is already moving beyond theory; General Motors and LG are jointly developing this exact chemistry, with pre-production slated for late 2027 and full commercial production in the United States by 2028, targeting GM’s full-size electric trucks and SUVs. This signals that the era of affordable, high-range EV batteries in the American market is likely just around two years away, promising to make electric vehicles much more accessible.

Description
LG’s LMR Battery Breakthrough: Cheaper Than LFP, More Range Than LFP
LG Energy Solution, partnering with GM, has developed a new lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) battery chemistry that delivers roughly 33% higher energy density than the best lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at a comparable cost, by relying on cheap, abundant manganese instead of costly cobalt and nickel. GM plans to industrialize LMR cells for full-size trucks and SUVs starting in 2028, targeting over 400 miles (640km) of range — positioning it as a way to break China’s dominance in low-cost EV battery production.
