The Warehouse War: Ukraine’s Strategy Against Russian E-commerce (Wildberries) Logistics
Clip title: The Warehouse War - The “Wildberries” Strikes, Economics & Russian Response Author / channel: Perun URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ginJlaGggag
Summary
The video details a new dimension in the ongoing long-range strike campaign between Ukraine and Russia, focusing on the recent targeting of civilian e-commerce warehouses. While both sides previously focused on targets with obvious military and economic significance like oil refineries, ammunition depots, and missile plants, Ukraine has recently added logistics and distribution centers belonging to companies like Wildberries (often dubbed “Russia’s Amazon”) to its target list. The video clarifies that this “warehouse war” is not a replacement for existing long-range efforts, but an addition, as strikes against Russian refineries and naval logistics in the Black Sea continue apace, demonstrating a sustained and even increasing tempo of these traditional targets.
The rationale behind Ukraine’s strikes on Wildberries facilities is multi-faceted. Wildberries experienced immense growth post-2022, becoming a cornerstone of Russia’s “platform economy” by facilitating the import and distribution of goods after many Western companies exited. Ukrainian officials assert that these warehouses are dual-use, playing a role in supplying military or military-adjacent goods for the “Special Military Operation.” Strategically, e-commerce warehouses present ideal targets due to their high concentration of valuable goods, flammable materials, and lack of hardened defenses, making them vulnerable to relatively inexpensive drone attacks. These numerous, dispersed targets also force Russia to spread its scarce air defense resources, potentially weakening protection for other critical military assets.
The economic fallout from these strikes is substantial, with direct damage to facilities and stock estimated in the billions of US dollars. Beyond infrastructure, hundreds of thousands of small businesses and sellers relying on Wildberries face potential ruin due to inadequate compensation and insurance, triggering indirect economic impacts across supply chains and potentially leading to a broader “contagion” effect within the Russian economy. This is exacerbated by Russia’s climbing budget deficit, persistent inflation, and deteriorating loan quality in its banking sector, making financial interventions to mitigate these risks increasingly costly.
Russia has responded in kind, escalating its own attacks on similar Ukrainian civilian logistics hubs, claiming they too store dual-use items. However, the video highlights a significant asymmetry: Ukraine primarily uses relatively cheap, numerous one-way attack drones, making strikes on soft, valuable targets like warehouses a cost-effective way to inflict damage and stretch Russian defenses. In contrast, Russia’s arsenal largely consists of more expensive, powerful ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones. Using these high-value munitions on civilian warehouses may be suboptimal for Russia in the “grim math” of war, as those missiles could instead be deployed against more critical Ukrainian military-industrial targets like drone factories or headquarters, which are harder to destroy. The video also touches on diplomacy, noting that while Ukraine has offered “energy truces,” Russia has rejected them, potentially missing opportunities for mutually beneficial de-escalation.
In conclusion, the “warehouse war” signifies an expansion of the conflict’s economic front, leveraging the inherent vulnerabilities of civilian e-commerce infrastructure. While Russia possesses the financial capacity to absorb these losses through state intervention and debt, the cumulative costs and risks of economic contagion are substantial and not infinite. Future developments will likely involve continued, though possibly adjusted, strikes by Ukraine, ongoing adaptation by both countries’ logistics systems, and potential financial interventions by the Russian government. However, it is unlikely that these strikes will unilaterally force an end to the war before winter, with both sides seemingly committed to their military objectives despite the escalating economic costs.

Description
If the strikes on factories, refineries, ports and ships were starting to seem almost routine, then the sudden Ukrainian attacks on warehouses and e commerce infrastructure across Russia came as a bit of a surprise for some when they began last month.
Perhaps less surprising was the Russian response in kind, but as the headlines roll I think it’s important to look at this new stage of the long range strike campaign with a bit of perspective.
And so today, I talk through what the warehouse war seems to be, what it critically isn’t, and why Ukraine might have made the decision to add a new category of targets to its already extensive drone hit list.
