Auditory Nerve
The auditory nerve (also known as the vestibulocochlear nerve or cranial nerve VIII) is a paired cranial nerve responsible for transmitting auditory and balance information from the inner ear to the brain. It consists of two distinct functional components: the cochlear nerve (hearing) and the vestibular nerve (balance).
Anatomy and Physiology
- Origin: Arises from the brainstem at the cerebellopontine angle.
- Cochlear Division: Carries sensory information regarding sound from the spiral ganglion cells in the cochlea.
- Vestibular Division: Carries sensory information regarding head position and movement from the vestibular ganglion in the semicircular canals and otolith organs.
- Pathway: Synapses in the cochlear nuclei of the medulla, then projects via the lateral lemniscus to the inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body, and finally the primary auditory cortex.
Clinical Significance
- Auditory Neuropathy: A disorder where sound enters the inner ear normally but the transfer of signals from the inner ear to the brain is disrupted.
- Acoustic Neuroma: A benign tumor (schwannoma) that develops on the vestibular portion of the auditory nerve, potentially compressing the cochlear portion and causing hearing loss.
- Cochlear Implants: Devices that bypass damaged hair cells in the cochlea to directly stimulate the auditory nerve fibers, restoring perception of sound.
