Axis Rotation
Axis rotation is a technique for three-dimensional manipulation of two-dimensional images, enabling users to rotate flat photographs and images along multiple axes. Rather than applying simple 2D transformations like skewing or stretching, axis rotation creates the visual effect of viewing an image from different angles or perspectives in three-dimensional space. This approach simulates how an object would appear if physically rotated away from the viewer.
Digital Implementation
The Rotate Object tool in Photoshop Beta provides an automated approach to axis rotation. The tool uses artificial intelligence to interpret 2D image content and apply believable three-dimensional rotations, generating new visual information to fill areas that would be revealed by the rotation. This allows users to adjust the apparent viewing angle of photographs without manual perspective manipulation or 3D modeling software.
Creative Applications
Axis rotation is useful for adjusting composition in photographs after capture, repositioning subjects to better fit layout requirements, or creating variation in product imagery. The technique is particularly relevant in digital design and photography workflows where traditional reshooting or 3D reconstruction would be impractical.
