Blacks Adjustment
The Blacks adjustment is a tonal control slider in Lightroom Classic that modifies the darkest values in an image during post-processing. Located in the Tone Curve panel, this slider specifically targets the black point—the deepest shadow areas of a photograph. Unlike the Shadows slider, which affects a broader range of mid-dark tones, the Blacks adjustment operates on a narrower tonal range, making it a precise tool for controlling only the deepest blacks in an image.
Function and Behavior
Moving the Blacks slider to the right brightens the black point, lifting shadow detail and reducing pure blacks in the image. Conversely, moving it to the left darkens the blacks and increases contrast in the shadow regions. This adjustment is particularly useful in landscape photography for controlling how dark the deepest shadows appear without affecting the overall mid-tone or highlight exposure of the photograph.
Practical Considerations
The Blacks slider works independently from other exposure controls, allowing photographers to refine the shadow characteristics of an image after establishing overall exposure with tools like Exposure or Shadows. Care should be taken when darkening blacks significantly, as this can result in crushed shadows—areas of pure black with no recoverable detail. Conversely, excessive brightening may reduce the visual impact of shadows and diminish perceived contrast.
