Blur Correction

Blur correction in photography refers to techniques used to achieve sharp focus across an entire image, particularly in landscape photography where both foreground and background elements require clarity. The primary challenge stems from the limitations of depth of field—the zone of acceptable sharpness in a photograph. When shooting with wider apertures or longer focal lengths, cameras cannot maintain focus on all elements simultaneously, resulting in either sharp foreground with blurred background, or vice versa.

Focus Stacking

Focus stacking is the primary method for addressing this constraint. The technique involves capturing multiple photographs of the same scene, each focused at a different distance from the camera. A foreground image might be sharply focused at close range, while subsequent images shift focus progressively toward the middle ground and background. These images are then combined in post-processing software, which selectively blends the sharpest portions of each photograph to create a single composite image with uniform sharpness throughout.

Other Approaches

Alternative blur correction methods include stopping down the aperture to increase depth of field, though this approach has limitations with larger focal lengths and may require longer exposure times. Some photographers use tilt-shift lenses to selectively adjust the plane of focus. Digital post-processing techniques can also marginally sharpen blurred areas, though these are less effective than focus stacking for significant blur problems.
