Blur Correction

Blur correction in photography refers to techniques used to achieve sharp focus across an entire image, particularly in landscape photography where both foreground and background elements require clarity. The primary challenge stems from the limitations of depth of field—the zone of acceptable sharpness in a photograph. When shooting with wider apertures or longer focal lengths, cameras cannot maintain focus on all elements simultaneously, resulting in either sharp foreground with blurred background, or the reverse.

Focus Stacking

Focus stacking is the most common technical solution to this problem. The photographer captures multiple images of the same scene, each focused at a different distance. For example, one image might be sharp at the foreground rocks, another at the middle ground, and a third at distant mountains. These images are then combined using image editing software, which blends them to create a single photograph with uniform sharpness throughout. This technique is especially valuable in landscape photography where the depth of a scene—from very close foreground elements to distant vistas—exceeds what any single exposure can capture in focus.

Alternative Approaches

Beyond focus stacking, photographers employ other strategies to minimize blur. Using smaller apertures (higher f-numbers) increases depth of field, though this requires longer exposure times or higher ISO settings. Selecting appropriate focal lengths and positioning the camera to align the plane of focus with major scene elements can also help. Some situations benefit from accepting selective focus as an aesthetic choice rather than treating it as a problem requiring correction.
