Color Labels

Color labels in Lightroom are a fundamental organizational tool used to categorize and manage photographs within a catalog. They provide a quick visual system for flagging images during the editing workflow, allowing photographers to group similar images or mark them according to custom criteria. This system works alongside other Lightroom features like star ratings and flags to create a comprehensive organizational structure.

Function and Application

Color labels consist of six distinct colors—red, yellow, green, blue, purple, and magenta—that can be assigned to individual images. Each color can be assigned a custom meaning based on a photographer’s workflow preferences, such as marking images for further editing, flagging rejected photos, or categorizing by subject matter or client. Labels are applied quickly during the review process, enabling efficient sorting of large image collections without interrupting the editing rhythm.

Integration with Workflow

When used strategically within a broader editing workflow, color labels serve as visual markers that streamline decision-making. They can be combined with other metadata systems to create layers of organization, helping photographers identify priority images, group related shots, or track processing status across a catalog. The visual nature of colored labels makes them particularly useful for rapid scanning and identifying image groups at a glance.
