Ecological Succession
Ecological succession is the process by which the structure of a biological community evolves over time. It involves a predictable sequence of colonization, growth, and replacement of species, leading toward a stable Climax Community or dynamic equilibrium.
Types of Succession
- Primary Succession: Occurs in essentially lifeless areas where the soil is incapable of sustaining life (e.g., lava flows, newly formed sand dunes, rocks left from a retreating glacier). Pioneer species, such as Lichen and Moss, break down rock to form soil.
