Ercot Electric Reliability Council Of Texas
ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) is the independent system operator (ISO) responsible for managing electricity transmission and ensuring reliable power distribution across most of Texas. Operating as a non-profit organization, ERCOT oversees the interconnected transmission grid serving approximately 26 million customers in central, eastern, and northern portions of the state. The organization does not own generation facilities, transmission lines, or distribution systems; rather, it coordinates the operations of these facilities owned by various utilities and power generators to maintain grid stability and reliability.
Operations and Responsibilities
ERCOT’s primary functions include managing real-time electricity supply and demand, operating wholesale electricity markets, and ensuring that power generation meets consumer demand across its service territory. The organization coordinates with power plants, transmission operators, and distributors to balance electricity flow throughout the grid. ERCOT also establishes standards and protocols for grid operations and maintains emergency response procedures to address service disruptions.
Grid Coverage and Structure
The ERCOT grid covers approximately 90% of Texas’s electricity demand, excluding areas served by municipal utilities and electric cooperatives that operate independently. This fragmented regulatory structure has important implications for grid management during extreme weather events or supply shortages, as ERCOT cannot always coordinate response measures across the entire state.
