Existential Risk

Existential risk refers to threats capable of causing human extinction or permanently curtailing human potential. Unlike localized disasters or temporary setbacks, existential risks pose the possibility of irreversible harm to civilization as a whole. These threats may operate through direct mechanisms—such as catastrophic loss of life—or indirect ones, such as the collapse of essential systems that sustain modern societies.

Natural and Anthropogenic Sources

Existential risks are commonly categorized as either natural or anthropogenic in origin. Natural sources include asteroid impacts, supervolcanic eruptions, and extreme climate events that could occur regardless of human activity. Anthropogenic risks stem from human actions and technological development, including nuclear weapons, engineered pandemics, artificial intelligence systems, and environmental degradation. The distinction matters for mitigation strategies, as natural risks require detection and prevention systems, while anthropogenic risks require governance and control mechanisms.

Scope and Uncertainty

The study of existential risk involves assessing both the probability and potential impact of various threat scenarios. Many proposed existential risks remain speculative, making quantification difficult. This uncertainty complicates resource allocation for prevention and preparedness. Additionally, some risks may interact or cascade—for example, a pandemic could destabilize critical infrastructure or trigger geopolitical conflict—potentially amplifying their severity beyond isolated impact assessment.
