Film grain
The visible texture or “noise” in analog photography produced by the random distribution of light-sensitive silver halide crystals within the film emulsion.
Characteristics
- Influences perceived texture and image sharpness.
- A fundamental element in film-emulation workflows.
- Distinct from Digital noise, though often synthetically replicated in digital photography.
Digital Application & Post-Processing
- Grain is frequently added during post-processing to provide organic character to digital files.
- Often paired with Vignette effects to simulate the aesthetic of vintage optics.
