Film grain

The visible texture or “noise” in analog photography produced by the random distribution of light-sensitive silver halide crystals within the film emulsion.

Characteristics

  • Influences perceived texture and image sharpness.
  • A fundamental element in film-emulation workflows.
  • Distinct from Digital noise, though often synthetically replicated in digital photography.

Digital Application & Post-Processing

  • Grain is frequently added during post-processing to provide organic character to digital files.
  • Often paired with Vignette effects to simulate the aesthetic of vintage optics.
  • Techniques in lightroom:
    • Grain and Vignette can be applied to simulate filmic qualities.
    • There are three distinct methods available for creating Vignette effects within the software.
