Full Self Driving (FSD) Supervised is an advanced driver assistance system developed by Tesla that operates at SAE Level 3 autonomy. The system manages both longitudinal and lateral vehicle control under specified operating conditions, such as highway driving, while requiring the driver to remain attentive and capable of resuming manual control when necessary. This positions FSD Supervised as an intermediate stage between conventional Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems and full autonomous driving.
Regulatory Approval and European Rollout
In 2024, Tesla received approval from the Netherlands to deploy FSD Supervised, marking the first European authorization for the system at this autonomy level. This approval establishes a significant regulatory precedent that may facilitate adoption across other European Union member states. The Dutch authorization demonstrates that regional regulators view the system as meeting established safety and technical standards for conditional autonomous operation.
Operational Requirements
Unlike fully autonomous systems, FSD Supervised requires active driver engagement. The system monitors driver attention through in-cabin sensors and will revert control to the human operator if the driver is deemed inattentive or if the vehicle encounters conditions outside the system’s operating parameters.
