Minor Planet Center
The Minor Planet Center (MPC) is the official international organization responsible for receiving, analyzing, and archiving astrometric observations of Minor Planets (asteroids), Comets, and Natural Satellites. It serves as the central hub for orbital determinations and the publication of Astronomical Almanacs.
Role & Functionality
- Data Aggregation: Collects astrometric data from professional and amateur observatories worldwide.
- Orbital Calculation: Computes orbits for new discoveries and refines existing ones.
- Numbering & Naming: Assigns permanent numbers to Minor Planets once orbits are sufficiently well-determined; manages the naming process in conjunction with the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Comet Nomenclature.
- Archival: Maintains the Minor Planet Ephemeris Service and historical data records.
Recent Developments
- Vera Rubin Observatory Integration:
- In April 2026, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory team submitted an unprecedented dataset to the MPC following initial operations.
- This submission revealed 11,000 new minor planets, marking a significant leap in survey capabilities and data volume.
