Monthly Themes
Monthly Themes is a structured personal development approach introduced by happiness researcher Gretchen Rubin as part of her Happiness Project framework. The method involves selecting a specific area of life or wellbeing to focus on each month, then identifying and practicing concrete daily habits that support improvement in that domain. Rather than attempting broad life changes all at once, this incremental strategy allows individuals to build sustainable habits by concentrating their attention and effort sequentially.
How It Works
Each month, a person chooses a theme related to an aspect of wellbeing they wish to develop—such as sleep, exercise, organization, or relationships. Throughout that month, they implement specific daily practices aligned with the theme while maintaining habits from previous months. This layered approach creates cumulative progress, as each month’s focus builds on established routines rather than replacing them entirely. The structured timeframe of one month provides enough duration to establish a habit while remaining short enough to feel manageable.
Application to Wellbeing
Monthly Themes work particularly well for health and wellbeing goals because they reduce decision fatigue and provide clear focus. By designating specific areas of attention in sequence—rather than juggling multiple lifestyle changes simultaneously—individuals can develop deeper awareness of their behaviors and barriers within each domain. The method emphasizes small, actionable steps over perfection, making sustained improvement more achievable than more demanding self-improvement approaches.
