The PDP-11 is a 16-bit minicomputer architecture developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the early 1970s. Following von Neumann computational principles, it became one of the most successful and widely adopted computer architectures of its era. The PDP-11 family found extensive use in academic institutions, research laboratories, and commercial organizations throughout the 1970s and 1980s, establishing DEC as a dominant force in the minicomputer market during this period.

Design and Technical Features

The PDP-11 architecture employed a 16-bit word length and featured a relatively simple instruction set with orthogonal design principles, meaning most instructions could work with most data types and addressing modes. The system supported eight general-purpose registers and offered multiple addressing modes that provided flexibility for programmers. Its modest memory requirements and reasonable cost made it accessible to a broader range of institutions than earlier large-scale computers, contributing significantly to its widespread adoption.

The PDP-11 proved influential in the development of operating systems and programming languages. Unix was initially developed on a PDP-11, and the architecture’s characteristics shaped many of the design decisions in Unix and its derivatives.
