Sky detection is an automated masking technique used in modern photo editing software to isolate sky areas in landscape and outdoor photographs. Available in tools like Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, this feature uses artificial intelligence to recognize and select sky regions based on their tonal, color, and textural characteristics. Rather than requiring manual selection with brushes or lasso tools, sky detection creates masks automatically, enabling photographers to apply adjustments specifically to the sky without affecting the rest of the image.

How It Works

Sky detection algorithms analyze pixel data to distinguish sky from other landscape elements. The system identifies boundaries between sky and terrain, buildings, or other foreground objects, then generates a precise mask around the detected sky area. This process accounts for complex edges, including irregular terrain silhouettes and partially obscured sky regions. Once created, the mask can be refined manually if needed, allowing for edge adjustments or expansion to include or exclude specific areas.

Common Applications

Photographers use sky detection primarily to adjust exposure, color, and contrast in skies independently from the rest of an image. Common adjustments include darkening overexposed skies, enhancing cloud detail, shifting color temperature, or increasing saturation.
