Start With Why
Start With Why is a leadership and communication framework developed by Simon Sinek that prioritizes articulating organizational purpose before discussing strategy or tactics. The framework gained significant public attention following Sinek’s 2009 TEDx talk “How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” which became one of the most-watched TED presentations. The core premise holds that organizations and individuals achieve greater success and build stronger loyalty by first communicating their fundamental purpose—the deeper reason they exist beyond profit or product delivery.
The Golden Circle
Sinek presents the framework through the “Golden Circle,” a three-layer model consisting of Why (purpose), How (process or values), and What (products or services). Most organizations communicate from the outside in, starting with what they do and how they do it. Sinek argues that inspired organizations and leaders communicate from the inside out, beginning with why they exist. This order of communication, he contends, resonates more effectively with audiences because it connects to deeper motivations and emotional drivers rather than rational product features.
Application and Influence
The framework has influenced business strategy, marketing, and organizational development practices across sectors. Organizations applying Start With Why typically focus on defining and communicating their mission and values before developing strategy or promotional messaging. The approach suggests that clarity of purpose attracts customers, employees, and partners who share aligned values, creating stronger organizational culture and customer loyalty. Sinek expanded the framework in his 2011 book Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action.
