Start With Why
Start With Why is a leadership and communication framework developed by Simon Sinek, popularized through his 2009 TEDx talk “How Great Leaders Inspire Action.” The framework proposes that organizations and individuals achieve greater success and inspire loyalty by first communicating their purpose or “why”—the fundamental reason the organization exists beyond making profit—before discussing strategy or tactics. This inverts the conventional order in which businesses typically present themselves, which usually begins with what they do or how they do it.
The Golden Circle Model
At the framework’s center is the Golden Circle, a concentric diagram with three layers: Why (innermost), How (middle), and What (outer). Most organizations communicate starting from the outside and working inward, leading with what they produce. Sinek argues that inspired organizations and leaders instead begin with why—their core values and purpose—then move to how they execute that purpose, and finally what specific products or services result. This order allegedly resonates more deeply with audiences and drives decision-making, both for customers and employees.
Application and Impact
Organizations applying Start With Why typically articulate a clear mission statement that emphasizes purpose rather than profit, with the intention of attracting customers and talent who share those values. The framework has influenced corporate strategy, marketing, and organizational development practices across industries. While the concept has gained widespread adoption in business contexts, its efficacy remains subject to debate among management scholars, with critics questioning whether purpose-driven messaging alone determines organizational success without supporting business execution.
