Stress
Stress is a physiological and psychological response that occurs when an individual encounters demands, threats, or challenges that exceed their perceived ability to cope. This response activates the body’s “fight-or-flight” system, releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline that prepare the organism to respond to the perceived threat. While acute stress can be adaptive and help mobilize resources for immediate challenges, chronic stress—when stressors persist over extended periods—can contribute to various mental and physical health problems.
Types and Duration
Stress exists on a spectrum from acute to chronic. Acute stress occurs in response to immediate, time-limited threats and typically resolves once the stressor is removed. Chronic stress develops when individuals face prolonged or repeated demands without adequate recovery periods. Both forms affect the body differently; acute stress may enhance short-term performance, while chronic stress can lead to sustained elevation of stress hormones, potentially damaging cardiovascular, immune, and neurological systems.
Health Impacts
Prolonged stress is associated with numerous health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, hypertension, weakened immune function, and sleep disturbances. The relationship between stress and health is bidirectional—stress can trigger illness, and existing health conditions can generate additional stress. Individual responses to stressors vary based on genetics, personality, coping skills, social support, and life experiences.
Management
Common stress management approaches include regular physical activity, mindfulness practices, social connection, adequate sleep, and professional mental health support. Cognitive-behavioral techniques, relaxation methods, and lifestyle modifications have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing stress levels and improving overall wellbeing. Early intervention and accessible coping strategies are important for preventing chronic stress from developing into more serious mental health conditions.
