Tesla FSD Beta

Tesla FSD Beta is a limited release version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, made available to selected vehicle owners for real-world testing. The beta program allows Tesla to gather data on system performance across diverse driving conditions and scenarios before wider deployment. Participants receive over-the-air software updates that progressively add or refine autonomous capabilities.

Technical Scope

The system processes data from Tesla vehicles’ camera arrays, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to enable features including automatic lane changes, navigation through intersections, parking, and response to traffic signals. The beta releases incrementally expand the system’s operational design domain—the conditions under which it is designed to operate. Each beta version receives a numerical designation indicating its iteration level.

Regulatory and Safety Context

Tesla FSD Beta operates under the regulatory framework governing autonomous vehicle testing in the United States, though the extent of regulatory oversight has been subject to scrutiny from agencies including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Beta participants are required to monitor the vehicle and maintain readiness to take manual control, designating the system as a driver-assistance tool rather than fully autonomous operation at this stage.
