Vignette Application
Vignette application is a post-processing technique that darkens or lightens the edges of a photograph while maintaining a brighter center, thereby directing viewer attention toward the main subject. This effect is commonly used in portrait, landscape, and product photography to create compositional emphasis and add subtle depth. The technique can be applied either during shooting through lens characteristics or, more commonly, during post-processing where it offers greater control and flexibility.
Implementation in Lightroom Classic
In Lightroom Classic, vignette effects are accessed through the Effects panel in the Develop module. Users can apply either post-crop vignetting, which respects the image’s cropping boundaries, or lens-based correction vignetting, which simulates optical vignetting from physical lenses. The post-crop vignette is the primary tool for intentional creative application, allowing photographers to darken or lighten edges independently of the lens used.
Control Parameters
The vignette tool provides several adjustable parameters to fine-tune the effect. Amount controls the intensity of darkening or lightening, while Midpoint determines how far the vignette extends from the edges toward the center. Roundness adjusts the shape of the vignette from circular to more rectangular, and Feather controls the transition gradient between the vignetted and unvignetted areas. These controls enable subtle, naturalistic effects or more pronounced artistic treatments depending on the photographer’s intent.
