VOR beacons

VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) is a type of radio navigation beacon for aircraft. It provides magnetic bearing information to the aircraft, allowing pilots to determine their position relative to the station.

Historical Context

Before the widespread adoption of VOR and modern avionics, aircraft relied on low-frequency-radio-range systems for navigation. These earlier systems were pioneering auditory navigation aids that guided pilots through sound rather than visual or digital instruments.

Key Characteristics

  • Frequency Band: Operates in the VHF band (108.0 to 117.95 MHz).
  • Function: Provides azimuth information (direction) relative to magnetic north.
  • Evolution: Replaced older low-frequency-radio-range systems which required pilots to interpret audio signals (e.g., “A” and “N” Morse code signals) to stay on course.
  • Modern Usage: Still widely used as a primary ground-based navigation aid, often integrated with DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) as VOR/DME stations.
