Whites Adjustment

The Whites Adjustment is a tonal control feature in Adobe Lightroom Classic that modifies the brightness of lighter midtones and near-white areas within an image. Located in either the Tone Curve or Basic panel, this slider enables photographers to selectively brighten or darken the whites without affecting the deepest shadows, providing granular control over image tonality during post-processing workflows.

Function and Scope

Unlike the Exposure slider, which affects the entire tonal range uniformly, the Whites Adjustment targets a specific band of the histogram—primarily the lighter tones approaching pure white. This targeted approach allows for adjustments that enhance detail in bright areas, recover blown highlights, or add luminosity to skies and light-toned subjects while preserving shadow detail and mid-tone relationships.

Practical Use in Landscape Photography

The Whites Adjustment is particularly useful in landscape photography, where controlling the brightness of skies, snow, water reflections, and other bright elements is essential. Photographers can use positive adjustments to lift faded highlights or negative adjustments to recover detail in overexposed areas, making it a standard step in the tonal refinement process for this genre.
