XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is an XML-based metadata standard developed by Adobe for embedding descriptive information into digital image files. In creative workflows, XMP data typically includes keywords, ratings, color labels, captions, and custom fields that organize and describe digital assets. This metadata can be stored either embedded directly within image files or in sidecar files (.xmp) that accompany the originals, providing flexibility in how asset information is managed across different software and systems.
XMP in Lightroom Workflows
Within Adobe Lightroom, XMP serves as the primary mechanism for storing organizational and editorial metadata. When users add keywords, adjust star ratings, or apply color flags to images in Lightroom, these changes are recorded in XMP format. This allows metadata to remain portable and accessible even if images are moved outside Lightroom or imported into other applications that support the standard.
AI-Enhanced Metadata Pipeline
