Biosphere 2
Biosphere 2 is a large-scale Earth science research facility located in Oracle, Arizona. Constructed during the 1980s and completed in 1991, the facility comprises a series of connected domes and enclosed glass structures designed to simulate and study Earth’s ecosystems. Spanning approximately 3.15 acres, Biosphere 2 contains distinct biomes including a rainforest, ocean, marsh, savanna, and desert, along with agricultural and human habitat areas. The structure was built as a closed ecological system to investigate how natural environments function and interact.
Early Experiments
The facility gained widespread attention in 1991 when it housed its first crew of eight bionauts for a two-year mission. The experiment aimed to test whether humans could live sustainably within a sealed, self-contained environment while maintaining the ecological systems that supported them. However, the mission encountered significant challenges, including unexpected population fluctuations among species, oxygen depletion, and other ecological imbalances that required external intervention. A second crew mission took place in 1994 with a shorter duration.
Research Legacy
Following the early crewed missions, Biosphere 2 transitioned to research conducted without permanent human occupation. The facility has been used by scientists to study ecosystem dynamics, climate interactions, and the behavior of closed ecological systems under controlled conditions. Research at Biosphere 2 contributed to understanding how ecosystems respond to environmental changes and provided insights into the complexity of Earth’s biosphere. The facility remains operational as a research and educational institution affiliated with the University of Arizona.
