Project Aristotle

Project Aristotle was an internal research initiative at google aimed at identifying the key dynamics that make a team effective. Conducted the People Operations team, the study analyzed over 180 teams and thousands of data points to move beyond individual performance metrics toward understanding collective success.

Key Findings

The primary finding was that psychological safety is the most critical factor for team effectiveness, ranking higher than clear goals, reliability, or structure.

  • Psychological Safety: The belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes.
  • Structured Autonomy: Clear goals and defined roles allow teams to operate efficiently.
