South Australia
South Australia is a state located on the southern coast of Australia. It is the fifth-largest state by area and has a population of approximately 1.8 million people, with the majority concentrated in the capital city of Adelaide. The state is known for its wine regions, particularly the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, which produce some of Australia’s most renowned wines.
Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is a town located in the remote outback region of northern South Australia, approximately 840 kilometres north of Adelaide. The town is distinctive for its subterranean architecture, with many buildings and residences constructed underground. This unusual settlement pattern emerged due to the region’s extreme heat, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C, and the availability of opal-bearing rock that made underground excavation practical. The town developed following the discovery of opals in the area in the early 20th century and has become a significant opal mining centre, earning it the nickname “opal capital of the world.”
Underground living in Coober Pedy provides natural insulation, maintaining cooler temperatures year-round and reducing the need for air conditioning. Residents live in dugouts carved into the hillsides, while shops, churches, and even a hotel operate beneath the surface. The unique geological and climatic conditions that initially drove the development of underground construction have made Coober Pedy a notable example of human adaptation to extreme desert environments.
