Hi friends,
Here’s something I am trying: having an AI agent summarise my most valued podcasts for me and present to my inbox. I just no longer have time to listen to all the ones I want to.
Rob the AI Guy (a channel I follow) showed a workflow using Kortex.ai to build an agent that does this kind of thing. I used it to go into the health Pulse podcast (available on Spotify or YouTube) and produce a structured summary that it sends to my work inbox. I like Louise Schaper’s podcast but I just can’t keep up with the hit on my time. So this way I get the highlights of the episode sent to me and I can decide if it’s what I am interested in.
Given the number of podcasts we all listen to, perhaps this approach might help you all.
Setting it up was pretty easy. The free account plan with Kortex gives you one agent which should be enough for one podcast transcript on a regular basis. Below in the email you will see what the output was. Here is the original podcast: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=5_B_MGMXpbI&si=GEwkuAIYFKHyQQLH
BTW - this one was worth listening to. Bhavesh is clearly an enthusiast but is very sensible and currently pragmatic about the use of his AI agents to help families understand about surgery for their kids.
Also here’s the screenshot of how I went about it. I gave it only minimal email privileges from my junk Gmail account (one where I have no stored emails, no contact info etc).

The Communication Crisis in Paediatric Care** **The Real-World Scenario:** - Child in consulting room with parent (usually mom) - Often additional siblings present, creating distractions - Children climbing, playing with switches, taps, rubbish bins - Parent trying to control multiple children while listening to complex medical information - **Critical Statistic:** 70% of all adverse outcomes in medicine are related to communication problems **The Problem:** - **No brain space:** Parents can’t properly absorb information in chaotic environments - **High stakes:** Decisions about surgery need to be made - **Multiple explanations needed:** Information must be relayed to partners, grandparents, family - **Stress levels:** When stress is through the roof, comprehension drops dramatically **Key Insight:** “It’s not a scenario that allows good communication. You can’t take anything in. You can’t make a decision.” ### **3. Dr. Patel’s Evolution in Patient Communication** **Progressive Approach to Better Communication:** **Stage 1 - Visual Diagrams:** - Moved beyond simple stick diagrams - Created high-quality medical illustrations - Published on his website for patient reference **Stage 2 - Animations:** - Learned to create medical animations - Made procedures easier to understand visually - Provided dynamic explanations of surgical processes **Stage 3 - Video Content:** - Created YouTube clips of various procedures - Gave families something to watch and review at home - Allowed for repeated viewing and better understanding **Stage 4 - QR Codes:** - Added QR codes to materials - Made information instantly accessible on mobile devices - Enabled easy sharing with family members **Stage 5 - AI Avatar:** - Created an AI version of himself - Provides interactive, personalized explanations - Available 24/7 for patient questions and concerns ### **4. The Philosophy Behind AI in Healthcare** **Core Belief:** AI is not about replacing clinicians - it’s about enhancing patient care and outcomes **Dr. Patel’s Mindset:** - **Continuous Improvement:** Always looking for better ways to deliver care - **Technology as Friend:** Views technology as a tool to control and build with, not fear - **Practical Innovation:** Focuses on solving real clinical problems, not theoretical applications - **Patient-Centered:** Every innovation is driven by improving patient understanding and outcomes **Questions Explored:** - How do we responsibly integrate AI into the most human of endeavors? - How can AI support the clinician-patient relationship rather than replace it? - What does effective AI-assisted care look like in practice? ### **5. The Surgeon’s Continuous Improvement Mindset** **Surgical Excellence Principles Applied to Communication:** - “How can I do this faster?” - “How can I make it safer?” - “How can I make the wound look better?” - **Extended to Communication:** “How can I help families understand better?” **Key Philosophy:** The mindset of continuous improvement ingrained in medical school extends naturally to adopting AI and technology for better patient outcomes ### **6. Early Technology Background** **Dr. Patel’s Tech Journey:** - Started with first computers as a child - Had a Palm Pilot early on - Ran his father’s garlic bread factory on an 88 XT computer - Used green-screen, text-based MS-DOS systems - Did light programming and accounting software management - Made computers create music through different frequency beeps (before sound cards existed) - Built music when sound cards came out **Impact:** This deep, hands-on technology background from childhood gave him the confidence and skills to experiment with cutting-edge AI in clinical practice --- ## **Key Takeaways** 1. **AI Gives Patients Brain Space** - The best use of AI in healthcare isn’t about replacing doctors - it’s about giving patients the mental capacity to actually understand what’s happening when stress levels are through the roof. 2. **Communication is the Biggest Problem** - 70% of adverse outcomes in medicine are communication-related. AI can directly address this critical issue. 3. **Real-World Clinical Chaos** - Paediatric consultations are often chaotic environments where parents struggle to absorb complex medical information while managing multiple children. Traditional communication methods fail in these scenarios. 4. **Progressive Innovation Works** - Dr. Patel’s journey from stick figures → quality diagrams → animations → videos → QR codes → AI avatar shows how iterative improvement leads to breakthrough solutions. 5. **Technology as Enabler, Not Replacement** - The AI avatar doesn’t replace the surgeon - it extends his ability to communicate effectively with families when they have the mental space to engage. 6. **Clinicians Can Build AI Solutions** - You don’t need to wait for tech companies to solve healthcare problems. Clinicians with technical skills can actively experiment and build solutions. 7. **Childhood Tech Experience Matters** - Early exposure to technology and programming creates a mindset of “technology as friend” rather than “technology as threat,” enabling innovative clinical applications. 8. **Patient-Centered Innovation** - Every technological advancement Dr. Patel has made stems from asking patients what information they need and how they want to receive it. --- ## **Resources & Links Mentioned** 1. **Connect with Dr. Bhavesh Patel on LinkedIn** https://www.linkedin.com/in/drbhaveshpatel/ 2. **Dr. Patel’s Website - Better Kids** https://betterkids.com.au/ 3. **See Dr. Patel’s AI Avatar in Action (YouTube)** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fwikr_6JXc “AI Innovations for Improved Patient Experience” 4. **Pulse+IT News** https://www.pulseit.news/ Subscribe for breaking digital health news and newsletters 5. **Follow the Hosts:** - **Louise Schaper:** LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/louiseschaper/ | BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/drlouiseschaper.b... - **George Margelis:** LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drgeorgemargelis/ | BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/drgeorgemargelis.... - **Pulse+IT:** LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pulseitnews/ | BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/pulseit.bsky.social 6. **Production:** Octopod Productions | Ivan Juric https://octopod.productions/ 7. **Episode Details:** https://share.transistor.fm/s/45b263f6 8. **Additional Episodes:** https://www.pulseit.news/pulsepod/ 9. **Contact the Podcast:** pulsepod@pulseit.news --- ## **About PULSE Podcast** **Hosts:** Louise Schaper and George Margelis (digital health legends) **Produced by:** Pulse+IT **Format:** Pulse: Amplify - Conversations with leaders and changemakers shaping the future of health **Focus:** An enlightening, entertaining look at global digital health trends and current debates with deep takes on the latest news in digital health **Total Episodes:** 46 episodes in the series **Playlist:** https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKqwFRK6BfdLKEP2eznVZCZZi7A4aA-DO --- ## **Episode Context & Significance** This episode showcases a rare example of a clinician who isn’t just talking about AI in healthcare - he’s actively building and implementing it in his daily practice. Dr. Patel represents a new breed of physician-innovators who combine deep clinical expertise with technical skills to create practical solutions to real-world healthcare problems. The AI avatar concept addresses one of healthcare’s most persistent challenges: ensuring patients and families can actually understand and retain critical medical information in high-stress, chaotic environments. This is particularly relevant in paediatric care where the communication challenges are amplified by the presence of multiple children and anxious parents. Dr. Patel’s work demonstrates that the future of AI in healthcare isn’t about waiting for big tech companies to solve problems - it’s about empowering clinicians with technical skills to experiment, build, and iterate on solutions that directly improve patient care. The episode also highlights an important theme: the best healthcare technology innovations come from deeply understanding the real-world constraints and challenges of clinical practice, not from theoretical applications of AI. --- **Summary prepared for:** paul@longboardfella.com.au **Date:** December 6, 2025
