Summary

The video provides an enthusiastic and detailed overview of the ArtCraft team’s new suite of open-source software, which are presented as direct, from-scratch alternatives to Adobe’s Creative Cloud applications. The speaker expresses profound surprise and excitement, labeling this development as “breaking news” in the photography world and noting that many have awaited such tools “since the birth of AI.” These applications are entirely written in Rust, a modern and high-performance programming language, and are specifically highlighted as “clean-room implementations,” meaning they were developed independently without relying on any of Adobe’s proprietary source code.

The ArtCraft lineup is comprehensive, including PhotoCraft (a Photoshop alternative), VectorCraft (Illustrator), FilmCraft (Premiere Pro), LightCraft (Lightroom), PrintCraft, EffectCraft (After Effects), and DesignCraft. The speaker emphasizes Rust’s modern design and speed, drawing a connection to the theoretical “SaaS-pocalypse” where AI could generate custom software on demand, making traditional subscription models obsolete. A significant advantage underscored is the cross-platform compatibility of these tools, with native versions available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, addressing a long-standing frustration for Linux users in particular, who are often excluded from Adobe’s ecosystem.

The video then delves into practical demonstrations of PhotoCraft, LightCraft, and FilmCraft. PhotoCraft successfully opens layered PSD files, allows for basic text and vector editing, and features real-time curve adjustments with dynamic previews, akin to professional applications. LightCraft showcases impressive RAW file import capabilities, including DNGs, and remarkably can import and apply existing Lightroom presets. While some advanced features like AI-driven masking and realistic film grain in LightCraft, or smooth 4K/5K video playback in FilmCraft without proxies, still exhibit areas for improvement, the core functionality and user interfaces are surprisingly robust and familiar to Adobe users.

In conclusion, the speaker asserts that the ArtCraft suite “completely exceeds my expectations,” calling them “legit” and surprisingly usable given their nascent stage of development. The ability to import Lightroom presets directly and the broad multi-platform support, especially for Linux, are hailed as game-changers. Despite acknowledging some current limitations and the potential for legal challenges from Adobe, the speaker views this open-source initiative as a powerful and promising step towards more accessible and versatile creative tools, marking a significant shift in the digital creative landscape.

Adobe has been getting a lot of public scrutiny the last few years due to multiple issues including their terms of service, stance on AI, and pricing in general. But now, somebody vibecoded every adobe app including Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, after effects, Premiere Pro, inDesign, etc. in pure rust.

This video is a first look at PhotoCraft, LighCraft, and FilmCraft by the ArtCraft team. I might make another video about VectorCraft, DesignCraft and EffectCraft soon. These have only been public on GitHub for a few days and are early Alpha, but are already much more capable than I expected and might be very capable alternatives to the adobe creative cloud very soon.
