Single Autofocus
Autofocus mode where the camera focuses once upon half-pressing the shutter button and locks focus until the image is captured. Ideal for stationary subjects. Commonly labeled as AF-S (Autofocus Single) or One-Shot AF.
Key Characteristics
- Focuses only once; does not adjust for moving subjects
- Requires subject to be stationary or photographer to recompose after focus
- Provides highest accuracy for static scenes (landscapes, portraits, still life)
Fujifilm Implementation
- Designated as AF-S in Fujifilm camera menus
- Optimized via Fujifilm Autofocus Setup Guide:
- Selects Autofocus Area Mode (Center/Zone/Wide) based on subject
- Adjusts Autofocus Speed for balance between responsiveness and precision
- Configures Focus Priority to prevent shutter release without focus
Comparison with Other Modes
| Mode | Label | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Single Autofocus | AF-S | Stationary subjects |
| Continuous Autofocus | AF-C | Moving subjects |
| manual-focus | M | Full user control |
Optimization Notes
- Avoid AF-S for action photography (use Continuous Autofocus instead)
- In Fujifilm, enable Eye Detection in AF-S for portrait accuracy
- For critical focus, use Focus Peaking in manual-focus mode as backup
